Hay In the Pecan Orchard

Hay in the Pecan Orchard, 2009

charcoal, 14" x 19"

I first drew this image as a sketch in a Pecan orchard nearby and thought I needed to make a larger drawing to work out some compositional problems. I grabbed my charcoals and started in and as I continued the mood became different. The bright afternoon light began to look more like moonlight so I just kept the deep contrasts in the dark shadows and developed a darker Pecan orchard around the hay. I like the way that the hay bales look similar to a herd of grazing animals under the trees now. It's funny what can happen unintentionally during the process of creation.
