Big Creek Bend

Big Creek Bend, 2008

watercolor, colored pencil and ink, 9 1/2" x 15"

This was intended to be a color sketch for a larger painting I am hoping to start soon but turned into a nice little work that seems to stand on its own. I did the watercoloring and left it at that for a week or so and then started drawing into it with a white colored pencil and an ink pen, bringing out the forms and working with the light effects. It is of a place in Big Creek National Park in the Smokies that I've started going to lately, where the creek winds its way through long looping curves of rocks with a thick green canopy overhead. It is really a wonderful place with so many things to work on for me, though it is quite a walk to get back there.
