Swollen Creek, 2009
oil on canvas board, 18" x 24"
private collection
On a visit to the Kalamazoo Nature Center after a heavy rain I saw a different creek than the one I've painted so many times. It was up to the banks and was flowing strongly. The sun came out for just a few minutes here and there and gave the wet woods deep contrasts. I painted two versions of this piece, one in acrylic while I was visiting to give to my Dad who was in the hospital, and one in oil using the palette knives when I got back to Athens.
