Sunrise Moonset

Sunrise Moonset, 2008

oil on canvas, 26" x 24"

The light from sunrise has always fascinated me. I think I enjoy sunrises more than sunsets because the moments are so fleeting. When it is over it is just plain old daylight. Sunsets have twilight and first dark, so it lasts longer. In the early morning I am at my most creative, and seeing the light in the treetops is usually my first sign of the sunrise, a call to awaken. I have thought about painting that for quite a while and this is my first painting of the morning light touching the treetops. Together with the setting moon I think it really creates a signal of the changing of night into day.
