Mill in Winter, 2008
oil on canvas, 16" x 20"
I saw this scene one twilight in a Williamsburg, Massechusetts cemetary. An old mill and a shining puddle framed with trees looking toward the last light of the day. Winter sun is a wonderful thing and with the shortened days it seems that much more prescious. The color of this sunset was so vivid, especially seen in the midst of all of the subdued colors of a Northern December. It took me three Winters to finish this painting after it sat in a good sketched state. Spring would come and my mood to paint Winter would fade before I worked on it. This Winter I finally settled it.
