Foggy Sunrise, 2007-08
oil on canvas, 16" x 20"
I started this painting after having taken a back road early one morning catching a great sunrise. I sketched it down along with another good view of the mist with a single tree on top of a hill. Both images satyed as sketches for a long time until I started both out on canvases. This is the only one that remains after numerous changes and many settings aside. Re-starting an image is always a strange prospect, you learn new techniques and begin to look for different things as you progress as a painter. Each new step seems to open a whole new world of possibilities for the pictures that follow and the older pictures that were never completed get a second chance. This painting got several chances and I finally just popped it on the wall one day, and in a matter of a week it was done. Just like that.
