Creek Through the Rocks, 2010
oil on canvas, 23" x 20"
This painting started as a view in the Greenbrier Cove are I call the Big Rock. It was of a tangle of rocks and logs with a creek running through the center. There were only tiny glimpses of the water and the pile of rocks was imposing. It was brought to my attention that it seemed like the view was too blocked and I started experimenting with taking away rocks. One after the other went away and I was left with a nice pathway to the back of the painting. I started changing the light and developed this Fall color, late day light that really made it feel good to me. The surface is very thick and almost has the look, with so many layers of paint, like encaustic.
