Sunlit Creek

Sunlit Creek, 2006

oil pastel, 16" x 16"

private collection

This is a view of a bright afternoon with eye popping sunlight on the rocks in a wild mountain stream up near Tate City, Georgia. I was there taking photos and making sketches, and started an oil pastel in a spot near this. This view crept up on me as I walked along the rocks looking at the water and searching for things to draw. I did the work in the studio keeping in mind the intensity of the light and the constant movement that the water gave the scene. I let myself get pretty thick and gooey with this piece.
