Quad Color

Quad Color, 2011

oil pastel, 13" x 16"

The North Quad of the University of Georgia campus is a beautiful place filled woth old buildings and wonderful old trees. I work in the Law Library and watch the light change in the trees outside the giant wall of windows we have there. From my desk I see the sunrise light hit the tops of the trees and slowly work down them as the morning progresses. The end of my work day I see afternoon light angling from the other direction making the scene completely different. I have sketched these trees many times and this particular Fall day just had too much, too intense, and too strange of color to capture in black and white. I also took the time to experiment with scratching into the pastel to create a more active surface in the leaves that more closely matched the breezy day I saw.
