Overhang in the Woods, 2008
oil pastel, 14" x 18"
After many attempts to get just the right light on this spot I stumbled upon it. I had been looking at these trees and the overhanging limbs for weeks. I looked at them, sketched them and photographed them at different times of the day. I liked the sunrise light on this spot (like I do on most everything) and the evening light had a great slant to it too. But nothing quite got me interested enough to bring my easel and oil pastels until I took a walk to stretch my legs during a lunch break. I don't normally work in mid day so I didn't expect to see anything especially interesting but I did. The light in the center was coming down like water from a cascade, spilling down the branches to the ground. The next day I hauled my stuff there and drew.
