Janey Iris

Janey Iris, 2006

oil pastel, 16" x 13"

private collection

I drew this at my childhood home one morning when I was visiting there. The morning sun hadn't yet reached the flower, named after my late sister Jane, but was indirectly lit by the house behind me. The delicate color was standing out against the dark earth and rock wall behind it. and I set up right then and there to draw it. Iris are great flowers to work with so complicated and yet so fragile with a sturdy stem and leaves under them.
